What Does Rehab Look Like?

We get this question a lot – and you can take a virtual tour of our West Hollywood location to get a better idea of what rehab looks like. We call our West Hollywood location an ‘urban sanctuary.’ Driving up to it, you would never know that inside the courtyard is a rehab location with relaxing seating arrangements, custom-designed rooms and designer furniture. Does every rehab look like this? No! There are facilities of all kinds. Our Long Beach, Washington facility is in a coastal town and is more of a retreat in a rural setting. There are even rehab centers in the middle of the wilderness.

While it is certainly not the aesthetics of a rehab that make it worthwhile, having a nice facility can give you more ease and comfort while you are getting treatment. Having certain amenities like a kitchenette can make you more comfortable. A facility with close proximity to medical care, shopping and major airports might be a draw. Or, you may enjoy a rehab that is more of a retreat.

There are three main functions you need at treatment:

  • Eating
  • Sleeping
  • Treating

Eating Facilities

Not all rehabs serve cafeteria-style slop! In fact, many rehabs now have on-site gardens that the residents can help tend to, use locally-sourced food and cater meals. Our West Hollywood location caters meals for our residents, and our Long Beach, Washington center uses locally-sourced food for our on-site kitchen. There are all sorts of options when it comes to food, but make sure you choose a rehab that cares about your overall health, and that includes nutrition.

Sleeping Facilities

Are you envisioning bunk beds in a large room with zero privacy? Maybe some rehabs subscribe to that method, but most now use a more private system. We have what we call bungalows at our West Hollywood location, where you can often get a private sleeping room, share a bathroom and a kitchen, and have a common living space. This type of facility offers you the comfort of having neighbors, but also privacy when you need it most. Don’t worry, you do not have to share a bathroom with 20 others – just those in your suite!

Treatment Rooms

Does your rehab center have group therapy? Are there individual sessions? Both? Aside from being clean and functional, you want a rehab center that has more than just that. You want some Feng Shui, some aesthetically appealing furniture and décor. You also want privacy and comfort. Why? Well, for one, it shows that the center cares about how you feel and your comfort. And two, it demonstrates the willingness of the rehab to put themselves in the client’s shoes. If your treatment rooms have uncomfortable chairs or freezing temperatures, how likely are you to relax? The whole picture needs to be assessed when designing a treatment center.

To survive, we need food, water and shelter, and that’s about it. Companionship and care are nice extras. Rehab can meet those basic needs only, or it can go far beyond that to envelop the client in a comfortable and peaceful setting to add to their recovery.
